Trends for 2012

19 March 2012

According to the marketing agency Idea Works, the retail sector will be influenced by three major trends in 2012:  digitalisation, globalisation and polarisation.

  • Digitalisation –  online sales, on-site technology in sales points, digitalisation of products.  This phenomenon will have an impact on the size of shops which, by reducing the number of products on offer, will become smaller.
  • Globalisation and localisation – the lack of national growth is inciting shops to look further afield and, at the same time, global retailers are opening local sales points to back up their online activities.
  • Polarisation – a strong trend for general public outlets is a predominance for the luxury and low-cost segments.

But other factors must be taken into consideration for 2012 :

  • The increase in demand for SoLoMo buyers.  Short for "Social, Local and Mobile", a Smartphone application allows buyers to find and compare products before buying.
  • Hangout Boutiques.  These shops allow potential buyers to test the products before they buy them.
  • Pop-up Store Mash up, or short-life shops, are becoming more and more inventive thanks to the use of new technology.  Click on the following link to see an example of a virtual supermarket in the Parisian metro :
